Meet the Brewer Plimsoll Line, Redcar

On Monday 12 May 2008 we had the opportunity to meet the brewer; in this case it was the Head Brewer and Managing Director from the Saltaire Brewery near Bradford in the JD Wetherspoons pub The Plimsoll Line in Redcar. Paul Simpson, Managing Director and Head Brewer, Tony Gartland were on hand to offer advice about their ale and to offer samples from a sample of their excellent range of beers. The range of beers included: Saltaire Blonde A straw coloured light ale (4%ABV), with soft malt flavours, delicately hopped with Czech and German hop varieties. Blackberry Cascade - American style pale ale, hopped with Cascade and Centennial hops, infused with a hint of blackberries. (4.8% ABV) Dark Mild - A classic dark mild bitter with a hint of sweetness, moderately hopped with Fuggle hops. (3.8% ABV) Hazelnut and Coffee Porter A smooth porter, with German malts and hops. Added fresh ground coffee and hazelnut flavours. (4.6% ABV) Yorkshire Pale Bitter - A pale bitter (3.8%ABV), featuring malts from Castleford, Fuggles and Goldings hops and citrus flavours. The evening was an excellent night and offered Camra members the opportunity to enjoy a range of Saltaire beers. The Redscar microbrewery

The Redscar microbrewery is now operating in The Cleveland Hotel On High Street West in Redcar. Chris Appleby hopes to have three beers on the range in the coming months, the first beer available now is Redcar Rocks (a very hoppy, amber beer). The second will be darker, maltier red beer which will probably be called Redscar Red & there is plans for a third beer which will be a bitter style beer in between the first two. The microbrwery is situated in the cellar of the Cleveland Hotel, 2.5 barrel plant with two fermenters. Chris hopes to sell the Redscar beers to surrounding freehouses in the future if the venture goes well. Chris & Lindsay Appleby run the Cleveland Hotel, which consists of of two large rooms - a bar area for pool & darts and lounge with a stage for live entertainment & boxbands. The intention is to offer a guest beer & a Redscar beer on the bar, the guest beers available recently were Theakstons XB & Camerons Strongarm. The entertainment schedule is Thursdays (Karaok), Fridays (Live entertainment), Saturdays (Quiz) & Mondays (boxbands). There is accommodation available, mainly aimed at contractors (8 double rooms in total, two ensuite).
