GOLDEN SMOG has been voted CAMRA North East Region Pub of the Year 2018

Cleveland CAMRA Branch are pleased to announce that the GOLDEN SMOG (1 Hambletonian Yard, off the High Street in Stockton town centre) has been voted CAMRA North East Region Pub of the Year 2018

A celebration will take place with the North East Regional Director presenting the award to the Golden Smog on Saturday 27th October between 2pm & 3 pm

For this occasion only the licensee has kindly agreed to open the Smog from 12 noon.

Background information

CAMRA nationally comprises of 217 branches within the UK which are attached to the appropriate CAMRA region of which there are 16 nationally. The Cleveland Branch area comes under two of these regions: North East CAMRA region (Hostelries situated north of the River Tees) Yorkshire CAMRA region (Hostelries situated south of the River Tees)

The Cleveland Branch covers an area roughly from Blackhall Colliery to the north, Long Newton on the A66 to the west, south down the A19 to Ingleby Cross and then drawing a virtually straight line eastwards across the North Yorkshire moors to Fylingthorpe and Robin Hood’s Bay at our most easterly point. CAMRA nationally run an annual Pub of the Year competition whereby CAMRA Branches can take part by nominating a Branch pub for the regional competition stage Cleveland Branch put forward the Golden Smog as a contender for the CAMRA North East Pub of the Year competition as it was voted Pub of the Year at the Cleveland Branch AGM in February and it also falls within the North East region. The Branch can also nominate a branch pub for the Yorkshire Regional competition The Golden Smog competed against the pub nominations put forward by the 4 other Branches within the North East CAMRA region (i.e. Darlington, Durham, Sunderland & South Tyneside, Tyneside & Northumberland) Over the summer months, CAMRA volunteers from each of the CAMRA North East Branches surveyed and scored the nominated pubs NOT in their Branch area according to the following categories. Quality of Beer/Cider/Perry Style, Décor, Furnishing and Cleanliness Service Welcome and Offering Community Focus and Atmosphere Alignment with CAMRA principles Overall impression

The Golden Smog will now go forward to the Super Regional round of the competition and will compete against 3 other pubs from Scotland & Northern Ireland, Greater Manchester and West Pennines CAMRA regions. The 4 winners of the Super Regional round then go through to the final heat of the competition which results in the winner being crowned CAMRA National Pub of the Year in February, 2019.
